 Coulometric Karl Fischer titration

HYDRANAL

Composition

Coulometry normally necessitates two reagent solutions, an anolyte and a catholyte. The anolyte is added to the anodic compartment and the catholyte to the cathodic compartment.
HYDRANAL®-Coulomat A reagents are used as anolyte. Every anolyte contains iodide and a sulphur dioxide/imidazole buffer in a suitable solvent. HYDRANAL®-Coulomat C reagents are used as catholytes.

Toxicity

HYDRANAL®-Coulomat G-Types have been developed as anolyte as well as catholyte.
These reagents are:

  • Pyridine free.
  • Chloroform free.
  • Carbon tetrachloride free.
  • 2-methoxyethanol free.

HYDRANAL®-Coulomat G reagents contain methanol as the most hazardous component. The non-toxic HYDRANAL®-Coulomat E is mainly based on ethanol and must not wear the skull and crossbones on the label.

Stability

All reagents have a shelf life of at least five years, as long as the bottles remain unopened.

Advantages of the coulometric titration

  • Easy to use.
  • High accuracy.
  • Suitable for the determination of 10 mg - 10 mg of water.
  • Reagents available with and without halogenated hydrocarbons.
