Composition
HYDRANAL®-Composite is the world's most frequently used pyridine-free Karl Fischer reagent for one-component titration.
It contains all the reactants, i.e. iodine, sulfur dioxide and imidazole, dissolved in diethyleneglycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE).
The R & D laboratory at Riedel-de Haën has recently developed an improved formulation for HYDRANAL®-Composite by using a
mixture of imidazole and 2-methylimidazole instead of imidazole only. Significant improvements in the properties of HYDRANAL®-Composite
have been obtained as a result of this change.
Stability
HYDRANAL®-Composite is stabilized with DEGEE. The loss of titre is approx. 5% a year.
Other Karl Fischer reagents contain 2-methoxyethanol (2-ME).
Toxicity
DEGEE is non-harzardous unlike 2-ME which is fetotoxic and teratogenic. All HYDRANAL®-Composites are pyridine free and free of
2-methoxyethanol. Toxicological studies are done.
Advantages of the one-component titration
- Unlimited water capacity.
- Three different titres available.
- Also convenient for the analysis of ketones.
- Widely used: many different applications for the determination of i.e. 1 - 100 mg water.
- Suitable for customary volumetric Karl Fischer titrators.
