Elafin Peptide Sequence1 |
Elafin is a peptide found in the human epithelia. It is a reversible, tightly binding inhibitor of human leukocyte elastase and proteinase found in human epithelia 3.
Ki = 1.7 x 10-10 M for human leukocyte elastase2
Ki = 4.2 x 10-10 M for human proteinase 33
Elafin is produced in human skin, lungs, and mammary glands. It may affect the inflammation process and protect cells against destruction by the immune system. Elafin has shown potential applications for the treatment of cardiac infarction and organ rejection, as well as for treatment of seriously injured tissues and inflammatory lung diseases.4
