HIV protease (E. C. # EC 3.4.23.16), a virally-encoded aspartic protease belonging to the Retropepsin A2 proteinase family. It is produced following HIV infection of host cells, and processes the gag and gag-pol proteins required during the early replication phase of the virus. Several inhibitors of HIV protease have been developed as successful therapeutic agents. HIV protease is a dimer with a monomer MW of 10,779. Sigma's HIV protease is supplied in the inactive form as a solution in 20 mM HCl. Reactivation occurs when the enzyme is reconstituted in buffers in the pH range of 4 to 7.
