 Nanotechnology Research Fields

Materials Science

Nanotechnology touches all high-technology fields and research disciplines. But nanotechnology can be classified into three segments. Find out how Sigma-Aldrich is advancing science in all these fields.

Nanomaterials

Any physical substance with structural dimensions between 1-100 nm can be defined as a nanomaterial. Nanomaterials were used for centuries; gold colloidal nanoparticles were the red colorants of stained glass in the middle ages. Scientists have mastered the controlled growth of nanomaterial phases and structures. Nanomaterials can be physically and chemically manipulated for applications and their physical and electrical properties can be measured. Nanomaterials represent the building blocks of practical nanotechnology. Sigma-Aldrich has brought you the nanomaterials you demand. Dendrimers, fullerenes, metal and ceramic nanoparticles are all available and we will continue to bring you quality nanomaterials products. Sigma-Aldrich and Cambridge NanoTech present a new Stand Alone Atomic Layer Deposition System.

Devices that manipulate matter at the nano or atomic regime. Devices such as atomic force microscopes, scanning probe microscopes, atomic-layer-deposition devices and nanolithography tools, can manipulate matter in the atomic or molecular regime. The future may even provide tools that can rapidly manipulate matter in an economically feasible time frame. These nanotools use chemical products available from Sigma-Aldrich as building blocks to nanotechnologies. We are working with key partners to integrate our chemical products into the nanotools you use in your laboratory. We will keep you up-to-date on exciting developments of these partnerships. In the meantime, click on nanotools to go to our products for nanolithography.

Nanodevices

Any complete system with nanostructured components that carries out an assigned function other than manipulating nanoscale matter. The first nanodevices on the market were quantum dot fluorescent biodetectors. MEMS devices are being used as accelerometers in automotive airbags. Many other promising applications are pending such as nanoelectric memory devices, nanosensors and drug delivery systems. Components to nanodevices will include nanomaterials, semiconducting organic molecules, polymers and high-purity chemicals and materials. Click on nanodevices to go to our nanotechnology homepage and select from our various product lines.
