Dominion Academy Junior High / High School Science Fair

ISOTEC™ recently sponsored an industry award at the Dominion Academy Junior High / High School Science Fair in Dayton, OH. Several of our employees helped to judge the event to determine the winners for excellence in applied science.

The 1st place winner was The Use of Antacids on Teeth Damaged by Bulimia Nervosa by Anna Burke, eighth grade. This project mimicked the effect gastric juices have on the tooth enamel of bulimics, by using vinegar and eggshells. She set out to prove that antacids would buffer the acidic content of the vinegar and would protect the egg shells, which would assist recovering bulimics in preserving their tooth enamel.

The 2nd place winner was Solar Still and Contaminated Water by Theresia Gordnier, eighth grade. This project examined the effects of a solar still on contaminated water for potential use as an immediate lifesaving water purification method. She worked with salt, sand, and potting soil mixed with water. Many of the contaminates were removed in the process.

The 3rd place winner was Biodiesel as an Alternative Fuel Source by Julianna Thompson, eighth grade. This project studied biodiesel against other common fuel sources in 3 areas: flammability, viscosity, and caloric value.

Congratulations for a job well done.
