Oxygen-18 is one of the key isotopes because it is the precursor of fluorine-18 used in PET. (Positron Emission Tomography). The most widely used of these, ¹⁸ F-Fluoro-D-glucose (¹⁸F-FDG), measures glucose metabolism and is widely applied in the detection and staging of malignancies, heart disease, epilepsy and other syndromes in clinical patients. PET scanning with ¹⁸F-labelled compounds, including FDG, is also used in many medical and drug research protocols.
