V. POLY(ETHYLENIMINE)-SUPPORTED ION-EXCHANGE
RESINS AND RELATED PRODUCTS
Work described by Meyers and Royer¹ in 1977 has led to the commercial availability of a variety of products based upon polyethylenimine (PEI) technology. These include a variety of precious metal PEI catalysts* that are clearly advantageous over
conventional supported and unsupported catalysts in areas such as benzyltype protectinggroup cleavage, reductions of aromatic-nitro groups and peptide syntheses.²,³

Crosslinked derivatives of PEI are potential chromatographic supports and ion exchangers because of their binding capacity for a wide range of metals. Applications would likely include purification of mercurycontaminated waste water and precious-metal reclamation.
Four forms of PEI resins are available from Aldrich:
24,674-3 Poly(ethylenimine), beads, 2040 mesh
PEI immobilized on a rigid inorganic matrix of high porosity is ideal for use in columns or in suspension (without magnetic stirrers). It binds polyanions, such as nucleic acids, very strongly. Suggested applications include chromatography of proteins, nucleotides and nucleic acids. It also effectively binds metal ions such as Ni2+, Pd2+, Pt2+, Co2+ and Cu2+.
24,675-1 Poly(ethylenimine), powder, 100200 mesh
Supported on an inorganic powder, this resin is suitable for use in suspension with magnetic stirrers and is usually conducive to rapid removal by filtration or centrifugation.
The PEI powder has been used in the chromatographic resolution of adenosine, AMP, ADP and ATP with a sodium chloride gradient. All components were recovered in 100% yield, unchanged, as shown by TLC and highvoltage electrophoresis.

These resins show a greater degree of hydrophobic character because of pendant benzyl groups, and strongly bind anions with polar components.
