Sulfur Compound Analysis Using SPB™-1 SULFUR for Petroleum Hydrocarbon Gas and Liquid Streams
Our feature article explores use of the SPB™-1 SULFUR for analyses of petroleum samples containing sulfur compounds. In combination with an FPD, HCED, or SCD detector, the SPB™-1 SULFUR provides excellent performance for the detection of low and high molecular weight sulfur compounds found in many liquid or gaseous petrochemical streams.
Researchers often can enhance retention of basic molecules of importance to the pharmaceutical, life science and other industries by using fluorinated stationary phases. In our second article, the retention of pergolide and sumatriptan using mobile phases rich in organic modifier is demonstrated on Discovery® HS F5. MS response improves significantly due to the relatively volatile mobile phases possible on the Discovery® HS F5.
Capillary GC Inlet FocusLiners improve reproducibility while maximizing sensitivity and detection levels and optimizing precision, accuracy, and reliability. Learn about the new line of FocusLiners for Agilent, PerkinElmer and Varian instruments. FocusLiners are available in single and cost saving multi-packs.
This month’s Featured Accessories include the Mobile Phase Degassing system for HPLC, General Purpose, High Purity, and Ultra High Purity In-Line Regulators for GC, and Supelco Customer Standards. In addition, SPME training courses organized by the inventor, Prof. Janusz Pawliszyn, are available. Two-day courses include both theoretical and hands-on laboratory training for SPME.
In 2002, researchers in Sweden announced that frying or baking starchy foods at high temperature leads to formation of acrylamide. Discovery DSC-MCAX SPE utilizes two retention mechanisms (reversed-phase and cation-exchange) to provide a relatively simple sample prep method for acrylamide. The unique selectivity of Discovery HS F5 HPLC used in the procedure offers great retention while maintaining good peak shape within an aqueous system.

Fast Analysis of Fish Oils and Animal Lipids on the SUPELCOWAX 10 Column
Our main article this edition discusses capillary chromatography for analyses of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from fish and land animal food sources. Polyethylene glycol phases such as the SUPELCOWAX™ 10 offer the advantage of minimal analyte overlap in PUFA analyses. Small ID capillary GC columns such as the 15m x 0.10mm ID x 0.10µm SUPELCOWAX 10 provide faster analyses. If your laboratory is performing PUFA or other capillary GC analyses, it is critical to have suitable GC accessories. Supelco provides the GC accessories you need to insure your analyses run smoothly. And if running PUFA analyses, you need reliable PUFA Methyl Ester reference standards and derivatization reagents for the job. Obtaining quality data fast is driving demand for short LC-MS HPLC columns. Where standard analytical column dimensions provide significant resolution of target analytes, shorter LC-MS columns such as the Discovery LC-MS HPLC Columns reduce run time without loss of adequate resolution. Good HPLC analyses also depend upon consistent, high-purity LC-MS solvents. Riedel-de Haën CHROMASOLV® solvents are notable for high UV transmittances and low levels of non-volatile impurities. SPME is a sample preparation improvement over many traditional methods. But advancements in how we coat SPME fibers make SPME even better. We now coat SPME fibers using an automated, continuous process. This process yields more reproducible SPME fibers by enhancing the uniformity of the fiber coatings.

Complementary Selectivity: Alkyl and Fluorinated HPLC Phases for Peptide Analysis
Our feature article demonstrates the advantage of complementary selectivity for resolution of complex samples. This approach is often considered with samples containing small analytes, such as the peptide contaminants in an immunogenic peptide sample we run on our Discovery® HS C18 and F5 HPLC columns.
On the GC side, we challenge our Equity-1 capillary columns with two Gas Processors Association (GPA) methods for analyzing Natural Gas Liquids. Equity-1 capillary GC columns have the ability to resolve liquid gas mixtures, allowing for the identification and classification of many of their components.
If you are a new gas chromatographer, you need the right tools for the job. Read about the GC capillary accessories that you may need in your lab.
Research has linked consumption of trans fatty acids with “bad” cholesterol. The Supelco SP-2560 capillary GC column was specifically designed for use in the study of fatty acids and their composition. And remember, if you are running FAME analyses you need a reliable FAME reference standard.
Mixed-Mode SPE was developed to improve selectivity/sample clean up when extracting basic / zwitterionic compounds from aqueous samples. We apply Mixed-mode SPE to the sample prep of human urine spiked with amphetamine and methylamphetamine. When compared directly against standard C18 SPE, Discovery DSC-MCAX SPE offered significantly less background potentially reducing misleading peak responses, column backpressure, and ion suppression during subsequent LC-UV and LC-MS analysis.

Efficient Separations of Analytes of Greatly Differing Properties Using Discovery HS PEG
The Discovery HS PEG (polyethylene glycol) phase exhibits less hydrophobic character than C18 phases. In our feature article, the Discovery HS PEG HPLC column is shown to be suitable for the efficient separation of acetaminophen and methadone, two analytes that differ widely in hydrophobicity.
When running HPLC, always protect your instrument and columns by filtering your solvents and mobile phase components. Supelco Mobil Phase Filtration Apparatus are compatible with all solvents commonly used in HPLC.
Vials, caps, and septa are significant to the results for any SPME analysis. CTC Analytics recently looked at different combinations of these to understand which combination yields the best SPME results.
GC users have long known the superior quality of Thermogreen LB-2 septa for low bleed and puncture ability. The superior quality of LB-2 is now available to Shimadzu GC users.
Capillary GC can be especially useful for the identification of anaerobic bacteria. Nonpolar columns provide a good separation of the methyl esters, and fast GC on a column such as the Equity-1, 15m x 0.10mm ID x 0.10µm GC capillary column significantly reduces analysis time.
When analyzing bacterial fatty acid methyl esters, you need a good reference standard. Sigma-Aldrich offers a BAME standard ideal for this analysis.

The Alumina Chloride PLOT for the Analysis of Freons
Alumina PLOT columns provide a better alternative to traditional packings, including the popular Fluorcol materials, for the analysis of Freon® gases. The new Alumina Chloride PLOT GC capillary column exhibits peak shape and resolution that is superior to the same application on Fluorcol packing.
When operating an Alumina PLOT, it is important to limit the moisture exposure. This month’s first Performance Tip discusses steps to insure optimal performance of your PLOT with minimal instrument down time. The Thermogreen LB-2 Septa remains the industry standard in septa. Is the septum in your GC a Thermogreen LB-2 from Supelco?
A Mol Sieve 5A PLOT is an effective means of separating permanent gases. The Carboxen®-1010 PLOT GC capillary column provides a superior alternative because of its higher surface area and larger pores.
Scotty Gas transportable cylinders are a good source of high purity and accurate calibration gases. This month’s second Performance Tip helps insure the best performance possible from your Scotty gas cylinders. If you need a reference standard but cannot find the right mixture, contact Supelco Custom Standards about creating the ideal mix for your analysis.
The solvent can seriously affect the performance of any LC-MS system. CHROMASOLV® LC-MS solvents from Riedel-de Haën are manufactured specifically to meet the needs of modern LC-MS instruments.
Polar reversed-phase columns, by design, impart polar interactions of retention as well as the hydrophobic interactions available on traditional C18 phases. The additional polar interactions can be utilized to alter the selectivity for a given set of analytes. Discovery® HS F5 HPLC column is demonstrated using the antiparkinsonian drug, selegiline, and two of its polar metabolites.
The utility of mixed-mode SPE technology and ion-exchange capacity can play a critical role in many bio-analytical applications. Discovery DSC-MCAX (Mixed-Mode Cation Exchange) SPE utilizes the dual retention mechanisms of both hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction to retain basic, acidic, neutral, and zwitterionic compounds from aqueous sample matrices such as biological fluids.
