SAFC Biosciences Introduces Liquid LONG®R3IGF-I

September 17, 2007

Lenexa, KS - September 17, 2007 - SAFC Biosciences, a member of the Sigma-Aldrich Group (Nasdaq:SIAL), has announced the availability in liquid form of its LONG®R3IGF-I recombinant analog of human insulin-like growth factor-I.

LONG®R3IGF-I additive has been specifically engineered as a critical cGMP raw material for cell culture performance enhancement in either research or large scale culture systems. The liquid has a number of additional benefits to the lyophilized powder version, while convenience and specificity make it a superior alternative to insulin.

Both insulin and LONG®R3IGF-I bind to type IIGF receptors to stimulate cell growth in serum-free media - and crucially provide an animal component-free (ACF) additive meeting cGMP standards. Liquid LONG®R3IGF-I provides an easy-to-use ACF solution, which can be directly used in multiple cell culture applications without the need for reconstitution or thawing.

With equivalent performance to lyophilized LONG®R3IGF-I, the liquid version is a stable solution at 1 mg/mL in 100mM acetic acid. It is available in 5mL vial or 100 mL bottle quantities, stable at 4 - 8°C and can be used straight from refrigeration. Additionally, there are no differences in the manufacturing process for liquid as compared to the lyophilized powder version ensuring consistent products.

Commenting on the introduction, Rod Kelley, President of SAFC Biosciences, said: "LONG®R3IGF-I has successfully met the need for a secure supply of ACF additives to stimulate cell growth - and both the research and production communities will benefit from the convenience of the easy-to-use liquid option".

In its original form, LONG®R3IGF-I was re-launched in Spring 2006 and is used in at least eight FDA/EMEA-approved biopharmaceutical products. It is more biologically potent in vitro than insulin or native IGF-I and has been shown to significantly increase recombinant protein production.
