SAFC Arklow cGMP Manufacturing Site Receives
Responsible Care "Environment" Award

November 2, 2006

Responsible Care St. Louis, MO - SAFC, a member of the Sigma-Aldrich Group (Nasdaq:SIAL), announced today that SAFC Arklow Ltd., its cGMP manufacturing site located in Ireland, has won the "Environment" category of PharmaChem Ireland's Responsible Care 2006 Award. This award recognizes the efforts of SAFC Arklow Ltd. in developing an imaginative approach that reduces and recycles solvent waste from its processes associated with the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Responsible Care is an international chemical industry initiative that encourages companies to show commitment to improving all aspects of performance related to the protection of health, safety and the environment by going above and beyond regulatory obligations.

SAFC's award is in recognition of the value and benefits delivered by its cross-functional Waste Solvent Recovery Project, launched in 2005. The project's aim was to eliminate, reduce and recover waste streams in all its solvent-using processes. The Arklow site secured key gains covered by inventory management, enhancing stock control, reducing transport of material for re-use, improving inventory management, lowering accident/spill risk, and improving processing to improve re-use.

Complementing the cost, energy and environmental savings through more efficient use of lower material volumes, the project also identified an alternative new outlet for its waste material - a local recycling customer, who recovers solvent for use in both the bio-diesel and paint industries, thereby reducing the previous export of its waste solvents and reducing fossil fuel requirements. The reduced disposal costs have produced a substantial cost savings for the company.

SAFC Arklow's Site Director, James Ennis, said, "We are pleased that our commitment to continuous improvements in product stewardship and responsibility has been recognized through receipt of this award. The benefits go well-beyond reduced costs and reduced environmental impact of our operations - this project resulted in wider energy and resource savings and improves the health, safety and environment of our Arklow site. It also assures our host community that SAFC has a clear and measurable commitment to operating at the highest standards."

The Award to SAFC Arklow Ltd. was presented in Cork, Ireland, on September 28, 2006, and was jointly accepted for the company by the Project Managers of this initiative - Tom Ryan, Operations and Supply Chain Manager, and Dora Forde, Environmental Manager.
