SMB Chromatography

Specialized Technologies

SAFC has expertise in chromatographic separation services through utilization of a simulated moving bed (SMB) instrument at SAFC Buchs site in Buchs, Switzerland. And at the SAFC Arklow Site in Arklow, Ireland. We offer method development and contract separation of chiral and non-chiral compounds up to kilogram-scale using a Knauer pilot SMB.

This state of the art technique offers the advantage of continuous separation with higher productivity and cost efficiency compared to chromatographic batch processes. Once a SMB separation is developed on a small scale, it can easily be scaled up to ton scale. A separation process can then be conducted for a long period of time with a minimum of maintenance.

  Applications
Separation of enantiomers
Separation of cis / trans isomers, regio isomers or compounds with similar physical properties

  Advantages
Higher productivity per time and volume of solid phase and the continuous withdrawal of product streams
Far lower solvent consumption compared to preparative HPLC
