LpDNPH cartridges are air-sampling devices designated for sampling carbonyls (e.g. formaldehyde) in ambient, indoor, and industrial atmospheres. Carbonyls are trapped on a high purity silica adsorbent coated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine,where they are converted to hydrazone derivatives. The derivatives are eluted from the cartridge with acetonitrile and analyzed by HPLC.
Features & Benefits of LpDNPH cartridges:
- High purity adsorbent for better accuracy and trace analysis.
- High sensitivity, low background.
- Low pressure drop, enables use at high sampling rates (1.5-2 L/min)
- New packaging, for maximum sample integrity
- Manufactured in controlled environment
- Meet EPA, OSHA, NIOSH and ASTM specifications

New and improved BPE-DNPH cartridge for simultaneous determination of ozone and aldehydes.
*Patent pending
The BPE-DNPH Cartridge is dual-layered and is comprised of silica gel impregnated with trans-1,2-bis(2-pyridyl)ethylene (2-BPE) as the top layer, and DNPH-coated silica gel as the bottom layer. The BPE layer retains the ozone for analysis or scrubs the ozone from the sample, depending on the extraction method. The DNPH layer collects the carbonyls for analysis.
The BPE-DNPH cartridge was improved by using the alternative isomer, trans-1,2-bis(2-pyridyl)ethylene (2-BPE) instead of our previous cartridge version, which used trans-1,2-(4-pyridyl)-ethylene (4-BPE). The new isomer (2-BPE) offers several advantages over 4-BPE as the ozone-capture reagent. These include:
- Better solubility of pyridine-2-aldehyde DNPhydrazone in acetonitrile/DMSO mixtures – higher product yield is derived from the reaction with ozone, and is eluted from the cartridge with less solvent.
- Faster reaction with ozone and less dependence on atmospheric conditions
- Faster reaction between pyridine-2-aldehyde and DNPH – less wait time is required between cartridge extraction and HPLC injection. Addition of phosphoric acid to the extraction solvent increases the reaction rate even more.
- Better HPLC peak shape of pyridine-2-aldehyde DNPhydrazone – lower concentration of ammonium acetate in the mobile phase is required.
The benefits of BPE-DNPH compared to DNPH-only products:
- Analysis of both, ozone and aldehyde
- Integrated ozone scrubber
- No extra connections
- No leaking connections
- Not affected by high humidity
- Low background
