TSKgel® Gel Permeation Columns for Organic-Soluble Polymers

Size exclusion chromatography (SEC), gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) are chromatographic techniques based on discrimation by differences in the size of the analytes. GFC uses an aqueous mobile phase and GPC an organice phase. The general term SEC covers both uses. \
Tosoh manufactures two distinct product lines for GPC of organic-soluble polymers. While each line is based on particles prepared from polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene, they differ in degree of inertness, and operating temperature range.
  • TSKgel Hxl-type, SuperHZ-type, and SuperMultiporeHZ-type columns are most inert to sample adsorption.
  • TSKgel Hhr- and SuperH-type columns provide minimal shrinking and swelling of the column bed when changing solvents and allow operation up to 140°C.
  • Small particle, narrow bore TSKgel SuperMultiporeHZ, SuperHZ and SuperH columns provide high efficiency, short analysis times and operating cost.
  • Except for TSKgel SuperMultiporeHZ columns, all other TSKgel H-type column lines contain at least five different pore sizes.
  • Each product line contains columns for the analysis of oligomers to polymers containing molecular weights as high as as 4 x 10^8 Da (estimated).
  • All product lines contain a number of linear columns that are prepared by blending particles with different pore sizes.

High Temp TSKgel® Gel Permeation Columns (HT=140°C)

TSKgel High Temperature columns are for the analysis of organic-soluble polymers. These columns are for applications up to 140°C and are shipped in o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB), which can be exchanged for 1-chloronaphthalene and trichlorobenzene. The TSKgel mixed bed columns are packed with particles of different pore sizes that are blended to provide an extended linear calibration curve. Mixed bed columns are used when a broad range of polymer molar masses is expected in the sample. The issue of shearing that occurs with the analysis of ultra-high molar mass polymers is overcome by the TSKgel GMHhr-H(S) HT column. The (S) is a reference to this shearing effect.

TSKgel® HHR Type Gel Permeation Columns

TSKgel HHR-type columns are more robust to solvent exchange, but are not as inert to sample adsorption as TSKgel HXL columns; they have a maximum operating temperature of 140°C. TSKgel HHR columns are conventional GPC columns of 7.8mm ID x 30cm, with a particle size of 5μm for the small pore packings and larger for the larger pore size columns. The particle composition and chemistry of TSKgel SuperH columns are the same as that of TSKgel Hhr columns, but the small particle size, narrow column diameter, and short column length require a low dead volume GPC system to prevent extra-column band broadening.

TSKgel® SuperH Type Gel Permeation Columns

TSKgel SuperH columns are packed with 3 micron particles that have the same surface chemistry and pore structure as the 5 micron particles in TSKgel HHR-type columns; they exhibit expanded solvent compatibility and have a maximum operating temperature of 140°C, but are more prone to sample adsorption than TSKgel HXL and SuperHZ columns. Since SuperH columns are 15 cm in length, the analysis time on a TSKgel SuperH-type column will be half of that of the corresponding 30 cm TSKgel HHR-type column without sacrificing sample resolution. TSKgel SuperH columns require a low dead volume GPC system to prevent extra-column band broadening.

TSKgel® SuperMultiporeHZ Type Gel Permeation Columns

Based on Tosoh′s innovative multi-pore technology, the particles in TSKgel SuperMultiporeHZ columns contain a broad range of pore sizes. Using multi-pore technology, columns with an extended linear calibration curve can be prepared without mixing particles of different pore sizes. TSKgel SuperMultiporeHZ columns are more linear than ′linear′ mixed-bed columns and provide improved MW accuracy and precision. The surface chemistry and temperature range of TSKgel SuperMultiporeHZ columns are like the SuperHZ and Hxl column lines, while resolution and speed are like TSKgel SuperHZ columns.
