Alumina & Aluminum Hydroxide TLC Adsorbents

Alumina interacts with analytes via H-bonds and dipole interactions, through exposed Al atoms, strained Al-O bonds and other cationic sites. Alumina is available in the so-called Brockmann types neutral, basic (pH 9.5) and acidic (pH 4.5 when in water) depending on the type and ratio of salts and degree of hydration, as well as other factors. Its selectivity is similar to silica with some differences. A drawback of alumina is that it can catalyze the degradation of labile substances.
