Certified Reference Microorganisms

What are Vitroids?
Vitroids discs contain viable microorganisms in a certified and narrow defined quantity (ISO/IEC 17025), produced under reproducible conditions (ISO Guide 34) with strains obtained from CECT®. The discs consist of bacteria or fungi in a solid water soluble matrix. Microorganisms in this form are stable for at least one year and are in a viable stage (no lag phase or recovery time). The disc to disc reproducibility goes down 4% at a level of 100 colony forming units (CFU). Each batch is provided with a comprehensive certificate of analysis that specifies the mean number of colony forming units (cfu), an expanded uncertainty about the mean, details about the method used to determine the product data and the number of passages (subcultures) from the original strain.

New Vitroids
Important changes to the Vitroids range of Microorganism Certified Reference Materials have recently been completed. You can now match these products much more closely with WDCM numbers, to align closely with ISO11133 regulations. The new Vitroids are now derived from CETC Spanish Type Culture Collection strains that provide broader choices of CRM with widely applicable cfu levels and ranges. The new products are based on exactly the same Vitroid technology and use the same production process, retaining the same excellent standard deviation. This means that they can be used for all existing methods and protocols as with the previous range. A new feature is that this new range utilises just one passage for every product. These new Vitroids have now replaced the previous range of Vitroids that were derived from ATCC® strains and had part numbers starting with RQC.

We have created a cross-reference guide using WDCM numbers, when possible, to match our old part number to the new strain used for our new Vitroid range. Where there is no WDCM number available for a specified strain, then the closest related product has been used using the CECT strain description directly on the CECT website. Use:

The product concentrations are designed in a range where no or only minimal dilution must be done. The discs dissolve in liquid media and on agar plates which means easy handling but it is also a very economical solution. Most solid and liquid medium or rehydration buffer can be used. The disc can be rehydrated in as little as 100 μL, or in larger volumes, e.g. 100 mL medium. It is also possible to add the disc to a molten medium used for pour plate techniques. The rehydration process takes approximately 10 minutes. On solid media, the disc forms a droplet that can be spread with a sterile loop. In liquid media, the disc dissolves very quickly.
