Still another way to load samples is to use a solid sample cartridge. Some samples that have low solubility in the solvent or solid samples such as natural products can be dried loaded into an empty cartridge. The common process for the solid sample loading is to deposit a sample on an inert support like silica or celite by rotovapping a slurry of sample and support. Then fill the solid sample cartridge with the sample, install the disposable frit using the frit insertion tool. Remove the frit insertion tool and attach the stainless steel cap. Install the solid sample cartridge in series with the separation cartridge as shown in the cartridge-stacking segment. The sample is then leached onto the separation cartridge. The solid sample cartridge can also be used to custom-pack novel resins and media to create unique separation modes. This enables the researcher to create chromatographic separations matched to their specific applications. These cartridges can be used individually as purification columns or can be stacked with other purification columns to create bi-modal separations.
