ATTENTION: This information is for all products with a blue Department of Agriculture sticker attached.

All End Users,

Biological products are regulated for import by the Department of Agriculture - Biosecurity (formally AQIS), and as such require permits for their import. All permits are issued with post barrier conditions, which cover specific applications and limitations together with handling and disposal requirements.

In order to comply with the Department of Agriculture requirements for the supply and use of these materials, please take the time to review the following conditions before opening and using the product and also share this information with fellow colleagues who will be using the product.

Department of Agriculture marked products must comply with the following usage conditions:

  1. In-vitro studies and/or in-vivo use in laboratory organisms – Work must be limited to in-vitro laboratory studies or in-vivo use in laboratory organisms only. Laboratory organisms include those defined in the following list and must be contained under laboratory or animal house conditions (or equivalent): guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rabbits, rats, rodents or micro-organisms.

  2. Non-laboratory animals and plants – For in-vivo use in non-laboratory organisms (e.g. chickens, sheep, cattle, etc. or plants, a separate in-vivo application must be lodged with and approved by the Department of Agriculture.

Veterinary manufacture – Products for use in veterinary vaccine or veterinary therapeutic manufacture also require Department of Agriculture written approval prior to use. Refer to www.daff.gov.au/biosecurity/import/biological/in-vivo/application for details.

  3. Agricultural, environmental or other veterinary applications – In addition, biological products cannot be used in the formulation or manufacture of agricultural, environmental or veterinary products (i.e. pet, stock or fish feeds), fertilisers or bioremediation agents without receiving Department of Agriculture written approval. This approval is also required to use biologicals in aquaculture, fisheries or for bait purposes.

  4. Selective/differential media – The following listed products can ONLY be used for the selective and differential growth of specific microorganisms in in-vitro laboratory applications. All other applications are prohibited.

  1. Microbiological culture or viral isolation applications – We recommend if you are using any Department of Agriculture labelled product in viral isolation studies or microbiological cultures that you call the Sigma-Aldrich Compliance team on 1800 800 097. They will be able to advise you if a separate Department of Agriculture approval is required for your specific product number.

Application forms to use your product in microbiological culture or viral isolation are also located at: www.daff.gov.au/biosecurity/import/biological/in-vivo/application
