Usage conditions for all products marked AQIS

Some products that you receive from Sigma-Aldrich have an additional sticker attached to the container that states AQIS Regulated Biological for in-vitro laboratory use only (or in-vivo use in laboratory organisms only).

The presence of this sticker indicates that the product:

  • contains raw material(s) of biological origin (animal, plant or microbe) and/or
  • was manufactured by a fermentation process utilizing biological materials and
  • is supplied in individual pack sizes greater than 20g or 20ml (on occasion smaller pack sizes may be affected)

Products meeting these requirements are classified as restricted biologicals.

Biological materials are regulated for import by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS). There are certain import conditions together with end usage conditions that must be adhered to, depending on the risk status assigned to the product and/or application.

The following generic Post Entry / End Usage conditions apply to the end user and people involved in the handling of these restricted biological materials.

1.  Work must be limited to in-vitro laboratory studies (or in-vivo use in laboratory  organisms only),
unless approved by AQIS for specific in-vivo use in non-laboratory organisms.

Laboratory organisms include those defined in the following list and must be contained
under laboratory or animal house conditions (or equivalent): guinea pigs, hamsters, mice,
     rabbits, rats, rodents or micro-organisms.

Work in all other animals and plants is not permitted.

2.  For in-vivo use in non-laboratory organisms (e.g. chickens, sheep, cattle etc.) or plants, a separate
in-vivo application must be lodged with and approved by AQIS. This also applies if the product is
to be used in veterinary vaccine or veterinary therapeutic manufacture.

     Please refer to http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/import/biological/in-vivo/application
to download the AQIS application form, to use restricted imported biological materials in
     non-laboratory animals.

3. Direct or indirect exposure of the imported materials or derivatives to non-laboratory organisms
    or  plants is not permitted.

4. It is the end user’s responsibility to ensure that all laboratory products are used in
accordance with the current AS/NZS 2243 Safety in Laboratory standards.
