Yes. According to our supplier, it is possible for trace metals to be present. The most likely metallic component present is iron; however, barium, chromium, manganese, and nickel can also be present. However, Sigma-Aldrich does not perform quantitative metals testing on this material.
How can Montmorillonite KSF, Product 281530, be used?
K-type montmorillonites are acidic catalysts that can be used in some synthesis reactions in place of Bronsted acids (like H2SO4, HCl, H3PO4, HClO4, etc), or Lewis Acids (like BF3, BCl3, AlCl3, SnCl4, etc.). Although the pH is not tested by Sigma-Aldrich, it is reported to be about 1.5 for a 10% aqueous suspension of the clay catalyst. Montmorillonite KSF is easier to handle and less corrosive than the traditional aforementioned acid catalysts.
