Application

Ethanol has been used:
• as a solvent for lovastatin.

• to fix tissue sections on a slide during laser capture microdissection (LCM).

General description

Pure ethyl alcohol is a non-denatured 200proof ethanol. Ethanol, a primary alcohol, is an important raw material for the synthesis of various compounds. It can be synthesized either from molasses by fermentation or by hydration of ethylene. It acts as a hydrogen source and reaction medium during the transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The impact of ethanol/water fumigation on the performance of diesel engines has been studied. Anhydrous grade solvents show extremely low percentage water and low residue levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which document(s) contains shelf-life or expiration date information for a given product?
If available for a given product, the recommended re-test date or the expiration date can be found on the Certificate of Analysis. These documents are located on the product detail page under Useful Links & Tools. Click on the following link to search for a Certificate of Analysis. Please click the following link to see the details on our Product Dating Information.
How do I get lot-specific information or a Certificate of Analysis?
A Certificate of Analysis is available by lot number and can be obtained through our Advanced Search Option: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/AdvancedSearchPage.do
Who do I contact about larger solvent volume needs?
Email us at labessentials@sial.com or visit Sigma-Aldrich Fine Chemicals for development and manufacturing-scale inquiries: safcglobal@sial.com
How do I know what packaging options are available for a solvent?
The Solvent Center gives you the ability to review all the specifications associated with our solvent packaging. This includes physical dimensions, closure types, dispensing methods, UN/DOT Rating as well as solvent compatibility. Visit the Solvent Center at: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/chemistry/solvents.html
Who do I contact if I need a solvent blend, which you do not carry?
Email us at http://labessentials@sial.com. For a complete listing of all our Solvent blends, visit the Solvent Center: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/chemistry/solvents.html
The dispensing of solvents provides some challenges due to the number of container options available. What dispensing options are available for each container?
The Sigma-Aldrich Solvent Center provides numerous dispensing options for each container type. For a complete listing of all our dispensing options, visit the Solvent Center: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/chemistry/solvents.html
Which solvent grade should I be using for my application?
Sigma-Aldrich Solvent Applications Table gives a guideline to common applications and the appropriate solvent grades.  Visit:  http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/solvents
What are the options for drying solvents?
Sigma-Aldrich offers a full range of high-purity solvents with extremely low water levels specifically manufactured for moisture sensitive Organic and Biotech applications.  Sigma-Aldrich also carries various drying agents such as molecular sieves, which are typically compatible with organic solvents.
What apparatus do you recommend for HPLC solvent filtration?
The Sigma-Aldrich Vacuum Filtration Assembly gives you all the components you need including: funnel top, fritted glass funnel support, filtration flask, aluminum clamp, and silicone stopper.  The Acrodisc Syringe Filters offer high quality filtration for analytical samples, certified for HPLC to ensure low extractable and available in a broad range of membranes to meet sample compatibility requirements.
Can you recommend a Solvent Extractor for organics from aqueous solution?
Solvent extractors are often used for the quantitative extraction of organics from aqueous solutions and separations in immunoassays. The MIXXOR system has been applied successfully in many laboratory solvent extraction operations and is ideal for the rapid screening of alternative solvents for specific extraction problems.
What is 190 proof and 200 proof ethanol?
All non-denatured ethanol products have a proof associated with the product description. The proof is a measure of the water content of the ethanol portion of the product. The proof is calculated as two times (2 x) the actual ethanol concentration by volume.
How can I get help with the ATF paperwork for 190 and 200 proof ethanol?
Because these non-denatured ethanol products are federally regulated, an ATF permit is required to purchase 190 and 200 proof ethanol. Sigma-Aldrich takes the hassle out of this process for you! There is no ATF paperwork needed or records to be kept on your part. Sigma-Aldrich holds the permit, and immediately pays the federal excise tax. For more regulatory information regarding the tax on ethanol, visit the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives: http://www.atf.gov
How do I find price and availability?
There are several ways to find pricing and availability for our products.  Once you log onto our website, you will find the price and availability displayed on the product detail page. You can contact any of our Customer Sales and Service offices to receive a quote.  USA customers:  1-800-325-3010 or view local office numbers.
What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?
Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS. To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product, or search here.
Does Product 459836, Ethanol, contain any denaturants?
This product does not contain any denaturants. A denaturant is an impurity (e.g. isopropyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, etc.) that is added to ethanol to make it unsuitable for consumption. Even though this ethanol is not denatured, it is still only suitable for research and development use and is not appropriate for human use products.
Is Product 459836, Ethanol, DNase, RNase, and Protease free?
This product is not tested for the presence of DNases, RNases, and proteases. However, Sigma-Aldrich does offer ethanol products that are tested for these impurities. Ethanol products that are part of the BioUltra product line, and for applications in molecular biology, are required to be DNase, RNase, protease, and phosphatase free. Additional information about the BioUltra product line can be reviewed at the following link: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/Area_of_Interest/Biochemicals/BioUltra.html
What are the options for drying solvents?
Sigma-Aldrich offers a full range of high-purity solvents with extremely low water levels specifically manufactured for moisture sensitive organic and biotech applications.  Sigma-Aldrich also carries various drying agents, which are compatible with organic solvents. For drying ethanol, 3Å molecular sieves are a useful medium for removing any remaining water. For example, we offer these drying agents under such product numbers as 208574 and 208582. Sigma-Aldrich Technical Bulletin AL-143 is also a great resource for information on molecular sieves and the other types of drying agents available; this technical bulletin can be found at the following link: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/Brands/Aldrich/Tech_Bulletins/AL_143.html
