Principle
Heparinized blood samples are incubated with buffered NBT solution. Smears are prepared, stained and examined microscopically to determine the percentage of neutrophils exhibiting intracytoplasmic deposits of NBT-formazan. A procedure for performing a stimulated NBT test by exposing blood to bacterial extract is also described. A number of authorities have concluded that a stimulated NBT test is valuable for detecting intrinsic defects in neutrophil function.
