How does the storage temperature relate to shipping conditions?
The storage conditions that a Sigma-Aldrich catalog and label recommend for products are deliberately conservative. For many products, long-term storage at low temperatures will increase the time during which they are expected to remain in specification and therefore are labeled accordingly. Where short-term storage, shipping time frame, or exposure to conditions other than those recommended for long-term storage will not affect product quality, Sigma-Aldrich will ship at ambient temperature. The products sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than their recommended long-term storage are shipped on wet or dry ice. Ambient temperature shipping helps to control shipping costs for our customers. Can Product A6559, Adenosine 5′-triphosphate disodium salt solution, be used in molecular biology applications?
This is a Molecular Biology grade ATP. It is certified free of DNase and RNase. This product is recommended for any typical molecular biology application.
Can this preparation of Product A6559, Adenosine 5′-triphosphate disodium salt solution, be used as an ATP standard?
This preparation of ATP is not recommended for use as an ATP standard. The recommended ATP products for use as a standard in bioluminescence experiments is Product Code FL-AAS (preweighed vials of 1 mg each = 2 micromole).
What is meant by 25UMO in the size description of Product A6559, Adenosine 5′-triphosphate disodium salt solution?  What is the product dissolved in?
25UMO means 25 micromoles.  The 25 UMO size is equivalent to 250 μl of a 100 mM solution. This product is a 100 mM solution in water; the solution contains no buffer or salts.
Can Product A6559, Adenosine 5′-triphosphate disodium salt solution, be used for in vitro transcription?
The purity of this product should be sufficient for use in T7 RNA polymerase-catalyzed in vitro transcription assay, but we do not test the product for use in that application in our quality control process.
How long can aqueous ATP solutions like Product No. A6559 be stored?
Aqueous solutions of ATP are stable for months when frozen in solution at -15 ºC and for approximately one week at 0 ºC.  As with most products, we guarantee the quality of this material for 1 year when stored unopened at the recommended storage temperature (-20°C in this case).
What is the binding affinity of ATP (Product No. A6559) for Mg++ and other metal ions?
ATP has intrinsic metal binding affinity. The binding constant for various metals are (given as per mole): Mg++, 9554; Na+, 13; Ca++, 3722; K+, 8; Sr++, 1381; Li+, 25.  The ability of ATP to chelate magnesium results in effective Mg++ ion concentrations lower than the total Mg ion concentration.  For example, in a reaction with 1.5mM Mg++ and 0.2 mM ATP, the effective Mg ion concentration is ~1.3mM.
