Biochem/physiol Actions

BLVRB or Biliverdin IXβ reductase (BVR-B) gene encodes a biliverdin reductase enzyme, mapped at 19q13.1-q13.2 and is widely expressed in erythrocytes and liver and to lower level in heart, lung, adrenal gland and cerebrum. It is a broad specificity bearing oxidoreductase that plays a pivotal role in heme metabolism in mammals by catalyzing the pyridine nucleotide-dependent production of bilirubin-IXβ. It is also crucial for NADPH-dependent reduction of a variety of flavins like- FAD or FMN, biliverdins, riboflavin, methemoglobin and PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone). Furthermore, BLVRB converts biliverdin to bilirubin, facilitates tetrapyrrole clearance in fetus and also carries out FMN and NADPH dependent reduction of complexed Fe3+ iron to Fe2+.
