General description

Caudal type homeobox 2 (CDX-2) gene encodes the CDX-2 protein which is a transcription factor expressed in the nuclei of intestinal epithelial cells. CDX2 is a master transcriptional regulator of intestinal cell differentiation.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Caudal type homeobox 2 (CDX-2) regulates gene expression through transcription and pre-mRNA processing. It appears to induce the transformation of the normal oesophageal mucosa to cardia type and is differentiated to an intestinal type under the influence of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. CDX2 can act as an early marker for Barrett′s oesophagus in the absence of goblet cells as expression. It also acts as a marker to indicate colorectal lineage in adenocarcinomas. CDX2 is expressed in pancreas and can be used as a prognostic marker for Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). It plays a key role in the differentiation of Caco-2 cells which is a colon carcinoma derived cell line that undergoes spontaneous differentiation.
