Frequently Asked Questions

How does the storage temperature relate to shipping conditions?
The storage conditions that a Sigma-Aldrich catalog and label recommend for products are deliberately conservative. For many products, long-term storage at low temperatures will increase the time during which they are expected to remain in specification and therefore are labeled accordingly. Where short-term storage, shipping time frame, or exposure to conditions other than those recommended for long-term storage will not affect product quality, Sigma-Aldrich will ship at ambient temperature. The products sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than their recommended long-term storage are shipped on wet or dry ice. Ambient temperature shipping helps to control shipping costs for our customers. At any time, our customers can request wet- or dry-ice shipment, but the special handling is at customer expense if our product history indicates that the product is stable for regular shipment.

What is the solubility of Product No. C75209, Cholesterol?
We test the solubility of C75209 in chloroform at 1 g/4.5 mL (222 mg/mL).  Please see the following link to our specification sheet for this product:
I want to use Product No. C75209, Cholesterol, in cell culture.  Can I dissolve it in ethanol?
One reference cites preparation of a 20 mg/mL solution of cholesterol in ethanol (Razin and Tully, J. Bacteriol., 102(2), 306-310 (1970)).  However, the authors note that the cholesterol crystallizes out in cold storage, so that the solution must be warmed before use.
I want to use Product No. C75209, Cholesterol, in cell culture.  Can I dissolve cholesterol in DMSO?
One reference cites preparation of a 15 mg/mL solution of cholesterol in DMSO (Tomeczkowski et al., Enzyme and Microbial Technology, 15(10), 849-853 (1993)).  However, precipitation of the cholesterol under cold storage is a concern, and solutions may need to be warmed to redissolve any precipitated cholesterol.
Is Product No. C75209, Cholesterol, sterile?
This product is not sterile. Stock solutions would have to be sterile-filtered.
Is Product No. C75209, Cholesterol, soluble in water?
Cholesterol is essentially insoluble in water, less than 0.5 mg/100 mL.
Can I use Product No. C75209, Cholesterol, as an analytical standard?
We do not market Product No. C75209 as an "analytical standard".  It is for general research, so you are free to use this product in analytical work if you wish.
Is Product No. C75209, Cholesterol, USP grade?
Product No. C75209 is not tested to meet USP standards, or any other pharmacopoeia (Ph Eur, BP, JP).
Can I freeze stock solutions of Product No. C75209, Cholesterol?
We have not tested this ourselves, and precipitation of cholesterol from cold stock solutions is a concern. If you freeze or cool stock solutions of cholesterol, it may be necessary to warm them up again to re-dissolve the material. Stock solutions should be protected from light.
