Biochem/physiol Actions

The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is expressed in sodium-absorbing epithelia and also found in ocular tissues. It may play an important role in aqueous humor secretion and glaucoma. There are four ENaC subunits (αβγδ) and are expressed in the normal human eye. ENaC activation by proteases may be involved in cystic fibrosis, sodium retention and the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension in the context of renal disease. The γ-subunit of the epithelial sodium channel (SCNN1G) are associated with both mendelian and quantitative effects on blood pressure. It helps in blood pressure determination.
