General description

Transcription factor E2F4 is a protein encoded by the E2F4 gene in humans and belongs to E2F family of transcription factors. It helps in the regulation of cell proliferation and E2F-binding sites are found in the promoters of several growth-regulating genes. The E2F transcription factors play a role in regulating the expression of genes required for cell proliferation. Their activity appears to be regulated by association with the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) and the pRb-related proteins.

Solution in phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 1% BSA and 15 mM sodium azide.

Biochem/physiol Actions

The transcription factor E2F4 plays an important role in cell cycle progression of normal and cancerous intestinal epithelial cells. It acts as a target for developing novel and less toxic treatments for Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma (sBL). E2F4 is also associated in the promotion of proliferation of human intestinal epithelial crypt cells and colorectal cancer cells. Its mutations enhance the capacity of colorectal cancer cells to grow without anchorage, thereby contributing to tumor progression.
