General description

CD146 (cluster of differentiation 146) is also known as the melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM) or cell surface glycoprotein MUC18. It is encoded by the MCAM gene. Soluble CD146 is associated with the activation of angiogenesis. Circulating endothelial cells (CECs) may help in predicting clinical outcome in cancer patients. Tumor endothelial markers are expressed in a wide range of tumor types and in normal vessels associated with wound healing and corpus luteum formation. It may have significant implications for the development of anti-angiogenic therapies as well.
