The bioactivity is determined by measuring the FGF-6 dependent 3H-thymidine incorporation in quiescent NR6R-3T3 fibroblasts.

Physical form

Lyophilized from a 0.2 μm filtered solution in phosphate buffered saline containing 0.05% CHAPS and 2.5 mg bovine serum albumin.

Biochem/physiol Actions

FGF-6 (hst-2), a 14 kDa protein, shares a 70% amino acid sequence identity with FGF-4. FGF-6 is a potent mitogen for fibroblasts but is only slightly mitogenic for endothelial cells or melanocytes that normally require bFGF.
FGF6 (fibroblast growth factor 6) controls the metabolism of bone and acts as a regulator of osteoblast and osteoclast functions. Its expression is elevated in prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and prostate cancer, where it facilitates tumorigenesis through its autocrine and paracrine activities.

General description

FGF6 (fibroblast growth factor 6) is the primary ligand of fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4). The corresponding gene is localized to human chromosome 12p13. It is an oncogene belonging to the mitogenic peptide family called FGF. This protein is composed of 208 amino acids.
