Biochem/physiol Actions

Glutathione S-transferases are a family of proteins that catalyze the conjugation of reduced glutathione with a variety of hydrophobic compounds containing an electrophilic center. Their major biological function is believed to be defense against electrophilic chemical species, many of which are formed by cellular oxidative reactions catalyzed by cytochrome P450 and other oxidases. The different specificities of the three GST isozymes are demonstrated by determining the I<SUB>50</SUB> values obtained using the inhibitor S-hexylglutathione in the standard 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenze<WBR>ne assay. I<SUB>50</SUB> (A1-1) < I<SUB>50</SUB> (M1-1) < I<SUB>50</SUB> (P1-1).

General description

GST A1-1 is found in only a few body tissues, including kidney, intestine, lung, and liver.

Unit Definition

One unit will catalyze the conjugation of 1.0 μmole of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and reduced glutathione per min at pH 6.5 at 25 °C.

Physical form

Solution in 50 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.5, 50 mM NaCl, 1 mM DTT, 1 mM EDTA, and 50% glycerol.
