I have heard that I need to use sodium thiosulfate with Product M0880, Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), but I’m not sure how. Can you tell me?
EMS is a mutagen. After treating cells with EMS, the mutagenesis reaction may be stopped by adding the appropriate volume of a 5% sodium thiosulfate solution. http://research.fhcrc.org/content/dam/stripe/hahn/methods/yeast_genetics/EMS%20Mutagenesis%20of%20Yeast.pdf The use of a 10% sodium thiosulfate solution with 1% TWEEN 20 has been used to clean surfaces and items such as pipettes that have been contaminated with EMS in mineral oil. See: http://www.agron.missouri.edu/mnl/74/12kato.html
Is Product M0880, Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), sterile?
It is not necessarily sterile. For those applications that require a sterile EMS solution, the EMS should be added to the appropriate buffer or medium. The buffer or medium should then be sterile-filtered.
I received a liquid. What is Product M0880, Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), dissolved in?
It’s actually not dissolved in anything. Pure EMS is itself a liquid at room temperature; that is, the melting point is below room temperature.
How does Product M0880, Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), compare to Product 64292, which is the same chemical?
Product No. 64292 is tested for purity by a titration assay. Although M0880 is likely to be of similar quality, there is no purity assay performed on it.
