Description

Other Notes

Note: 60 Sigma units = 1 μmolar unit.

Unit Definition

One unit will hydrolyze 1.0 μmole of p-nitrophenyl phosphate per min at pH 4.8 at 37 °C.

Application

Acid phosphatase is routinely used to dephosphorylate proteins and nucleic acids. Acid phosphatase is an acid hydrolase that normally resides in lysosomes. It is used as marker for the identification of lysosomes in subcellular fractionations. Prostatic acid phosphatase has been used to study the stereochemical course of phospho group .

Biochem/physiol Actions

Acid phosphatase is a cytoplasmic lysosomal hydrolase that catalyzes the conversion of an orthophosphoric monoester and water to an alcohol and orthophosphate. Prostatic acid phosphatase activity is the difference between the total acid phosphatase activity and the acid phosphatase activity in the presence of 20 mM tartrate.
