Description

Unit Definition

One unit will hydrolyze 1.0 nanomole of sphingomyelin to N-acylsphingosine and choline phosphate per hr at pH 5.0 at 37 °C.

Physical form

Solution in 50% glycerol, 25 mM potassium phosphate, pH 4.5, containing 0.1% TRITON® X-100 and 0.05 mM PMSF

Biochem/physiol Actions

Initiates the formation of sphingomyelin-based second messengers. Activates MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) and SAPKs (stress-activated protein kinases); generates ceramide from sphingomyelin.
