Biochem/physiol Actions

TRPM7 (transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 7) is a Mg2+-permeable ion channel and works as an aldosterone-responsive protein. It plays a significant role in embryonic development. Absence or deficiency of TRPM7 activity causes defects in cytoskeletal arrangement, cell migration, proliferation, polarization and survival. It can phosphorylate annexin I and NMMIIA (non-muscle myosin IIA heavy chain), thereby affecting cell survival and cytoskeletal dynamics. Changes in TRPM7 activity also results in macrothrombocytopenia due to cytoskeletal alterations. TRPM7 is expressed in various solid tumor types and is associated with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, neuroblastoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
