Nitro Blue Tetrazolium (NBT) Reduction Kit 

Detection of defects in neutrophil function (e.g., chronic granulomatous disease).

Cytochemical Stain

Heparinized blood samples are incubated with buffered NBT solution. Smears are prepared, stained and examined microscopically to determine the percentage of neutrophils exhibiting intracytoplasmic deposits of NBT-formazan. A procedure for performing a stimulated NBT test by exposing blood to bacterial extract is also described. A number of authorities have concluded that a stimulated NBT test is valuable for detecting intrinsic defects in neutrophil function.
