WI 38 Cell Line human 

Recommended culture medium: EMEM (EBSS) + 2 mM L-Glutamine + 1% Non-essential amino acids (NEAA) + 15% FBS

Finite lifespan. Approx. 50, +/- 10, population doublings. Normal doubling time is 24 hours.

From normal female embryonic lung (expect collagen production). These cells have a very broad human virus spectra. Particularly useful for the isolation of rhinovirus. Cells from multilatered membrane when incubated for long periods with periodic pH adjustments. Used in the preparation of human virus vaccines.

Subculture: Spit at 70-80% confluency, approx. 1:3 to 1:6, seed at 2-4x10⁴ viable cells/cm². Trypsinize using 0.25% solution, with or without EDTA, 37 ^oC and 5% CO₂.
