S-Gal is a patented, water soluble, autoclavable chromogenic substrate for β-galactosidase. The enzymatic hydrolysis of S-Gal by β-galactosidase generates a black insoluble precipitate. Lac⁺ colonies grown in the presence of S-gal are much darker than those grown in the presence of X-Gal, allowing for easier differentiation between lac⁺ and lac^- colonies.
