Lectin from Pseudomonas aeruginosa 

Agglutination activity is expressed in μg/ml and is determined from serial dilutions of a 1 mg/ml solution using phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.0. This activity is the lowest concentration to agglutinate a 2% suspension of neuraminidase treated human blood group A erythrocytes after one hr incubation at 25 °C.

PA-I has a major affinity for D-galactose and its derivatives.¹ Extracts from Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells contain another lectin, PA-II which is specific for fucose.¹
PA-I agglutinates all types of human and animal erythrocytes and interacts also with unicellular protozoa, algae and bacteria.¹ PA-I induces mitogenic stimulation in cultured human lymphocytes pretreated with neuraminidase.

Purified by affinity chromatography using a modification of Gilboa-Garber.¹
