This series of reactive dyes is for use in fluorescence polarization assays and fluorescence lifetime imaging applications. These laser excitable metal ligand complexes, based on ruthenium, have fluorescence lifetimes between 400 and 800 nanoseconds. Traditional fluorophores such as fluorescein and rhodamine have fluorescence lifetimes of less than 10 nanoseconds. Longer lifetimes enable both time gated as well as time-dependent measurement. Another important aspect is their utility for polarization assays with high-molecular weight antigens. They can also be used to label amines on biomolecules under mild conditions.
