Microbiology is a broad topic that extends from basic science to detection, enumeration, differentiation and identification of organisms. It is a big part of the biotechnology industry; for example, microorganisms are used in the production of foods and pharmaceuticals, or to study single genes and their proteins. Bacteria and molds are part of nature and are sometimes responsible for disease, spoilage of nutrients and drinking water, and corrosion; however, they are essential for keeping the ecosystem balance, to process nutrients, and for production of diverse industrial materials (e.g.; fermentation products).
An initial aim of all microbiologists is the reproducible growth of their microbial cultures, regardless of whether the microorganisms are of natural origin or have been genetically engineered by man. Reproducible growth requires defined environmental conditions with respect to energy source, temperature, pH and nutrients. It is also important to have reproducible and reliable tests to identify and differentiate microorganisms. With this in mind, we supply a range of products and services designed to meet the needs of general microbiologists and specialists alike.
