    Glycine Receptors

The amino acid glycine is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate CNS. Glycinergic synapses are particularly abundant in spinal cord and brain stem, but are also found in higher brain regions including the hippocampus. The inhibitory actions of glycine are potently blocked by the alkal...

Flavor Ingredients Safety - The Fight Against Chemophobia

Much has been made lately of the importance of eating “naturally” as a means to good health. However, this concept of “natural” has been frequently misinterpreted to mean “chemical-free.” Given the proliferation of misinformation over the internet, it is perhaps not surprising to see that a growing ...

    AMPKs

The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) acts as a sensor of cellular energy status. AMPK exists as heterotrimeric complexes comprising a catalytic α subunit and regulatory β and γ subunits. In mammals, each of these subunits is encoded by multiple genes and at least 12 possible combinations of subun...

Multiplex qPCR with JumpStart™ Taq ReadyMix™ for Quantitative PCR

Multiplex qPCR is a technique that simultaneously amplifies two or more target sequences in a single reaction. Analysis of multiple targets per sample allows for conservation of limited starting materials, the ability to run an internal control (i.e. a housekeeping gene in a gene expression assay), ...

    Rh2(esp)2 Catalyst

By substituting tetramethylated m-benzenediproprionic acid 1 via a decarboxylative metathesis of Rh2(OAc)4 (Scheme 1), the Du Bois group at Stanford has improved the catalytic performance of Rh with respect to the oxidative C–H activation of sulfamate, sulfamide, carbamate, urea, and guanidine subst...

Summary: The ALAD enzyme is composed of 8 identical subunits and catalyzes the condensation of 2 molecules of delta-aminolevulinate to form porphobilinogen (a precursor of heme, cytochromes and other hemoproteins). ALAD catalyzes the second step in the porphyrin and heme biosynthetic pathway; zinc is essential for enzymatic activity. ALAD enzymatic activity is inhibited by lead and a defect in the ALAD structural gene can cause increased sensitivity to lead poisoning and acute hepatic porphyria. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
