Carbazoles

Carbazole derivatives are tricyclic aromatic heterocycles consisting of two benzene rings fused on either side of a five-membered nitrogen-containing ring. The intriguing structural features and promising pharmacological activities of these natural products have led to enormous growth in carbazole chemistry. Carbazole alkaloid derivatives are well known for their various pharmacological activities, including anti-HIV, anticancer, antibacterial and antifungal activities. Carbazole derivatives, such as N-vinylcarbazole and poly(vinylcarbazole) also have applications in industry and materials science as optoelectronic materials. The presence of a halogen allows these reagents to be used as substrates in various coupling reactions, including Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions.
