Phase Transfer Catalysts are often used in heterogeneous reaction mixtures to facilitate movement of a reactant from one phase to another. Phase transfer catalysts are known to sometimes accelerate reaction rates and minimize solvent waste, since the reactions tend to be heterogenous.
