Stable Isotope Labeling in Mammals

Researchers have expanded protein labeling practices to whole organisms. SILAM has been developed to facilitate in vivo labeleling of an entire proteome. SILAM achieves a complete, uniform labeling of the animal through the consumption of a diet of labeled amino acids. One source for this labeling diet is 15N labeled Spirulina, a strain of blue-green algae. This diet, in which all 20 amino acids are 15N labeled, allows for greater signals in data acquisition.
