Mechanism of Action

Pharmacology:

  • Constituents: The water extract of Populus sieboldii Miquel contains pyrocatechol and salicyl alcohol.2
  • Antibacterial effects: In an in vitro study, extracts from aspen bark (Populus tremula L.) with the use of petroleum ether (lipids I) and diethyl ether (lipids II) destroyed all Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae cells.1 The minimum inhibiting concentration (MIC) for Streptococcus pneumoniae was 0.5-50mg/mL for lipids I and 0.0005-0.5mg/mL for lipids II. The MIC for Haemophilus influenzae was 30-50mg/mL.
  • Antiplatelet effects: In an in vitro study, the water extract of Populus sieboldii Miquel inhibited arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation.2 The active constituents pyrocatechol and salicyl alcohol were isolated from this extract and pyrocatechol inhibited platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid with an IC100 value of 4mcM, which was 25 times more potent than aspirin.
