Scenarios for ZFN Technology Transfer

Are you deciding if you need to complete the material transfer form? Read through the examples below to determine if a material transfer agreement is needed for your research or intended use.

Example 1

An academic researcher wants to transfer a cell line made with a ZFN purchased from Sigma-Aldrich to a collaborator at a non-profit research institution.

  1. Academic researcher & collaborator sign online MTA indicating material to be transferred.
  2. Email signed MTA to Sigma-Aldrich, receive confirmation within 3-5 business days.
  3. Proceed with transfer and research.

Example 2

An academic researcher wants to transfer a ZFN purchased from Sigma-Aldrich to a third party contractor to create cell lines for the researcher’s use.

  1. No MTA is required

Example 3

An academic researcher wants to make a cell line created with ZFNs purchased from Sigma-Aldrich freely available to researchers at other institutions by placing it in a non-profit repository.

  1. Academic researcher & cell repository (ATCC, for example) sign online MTA indicating material to be transferred.
  2. Email signed MTA to Sigma-Aldrich, receive confirmation within 3-5 business days.
  3. Proceed with transfer and distribution.

Example 4

An academic researcher wants to transfer a cell line created with ZFNs purchased from Sigma-Aldrich to a for-profit institution for research purposes only.

  1. Academic researcher & for-profit institution sign online MTA indicating material to be transferred.
  2. Email signed MTA to Sigma-Aldrich, receive confirmation within 3-5 business days.
  3. Proceed with transfer and research.

Example 5

An academic researcher wants to transfer a cell line created with ZFNs purchased from Sigma-Aldrich to a for-profit institution for commercial sale.

  1. The academic researcher and the for-profit institution will need to contact Sigma-Aldrich to negotiate the terms of commercial use.
