Analytical Method: Iron (total) in mineral oil

Sample preparation:
Place 1 ml of the ferrocene-containing mineral oil in a 100-ml Erlenmeyer flask, add 20 ml carbon tetrachloride, 15 ml hydrochloric acid and 1 g ammonium peroxodisulfate and mix well. Boil the mixture for 1 hour under reflux whilst stirring vigorously (necessary: heatable magnetic stirrer).
Allow to cool, transfer to a separating funnel, separate the aqueous phase and transfer it to a 1-l volumetric flask. Wash the organic phase twice with 10 ml water for analysis and transfer this water also to the volumetric flask. Make up to the mark with water for analysis and mix well.
To carry out the analysis, remove 5 ml, place in a 50-ml volumetric flask and make up to the mark with water for analysis.
 
Analysis:
Determine with the above mentioned test kits.
 
Calculation:
Iron (total) content in g/l Fe = analysis value in mg/l Fe x 10
