Webinar: Biocompatible Solid Phase Microextraction (BioSPME): A New Tool for the Clinical Chemist

Since its first report in 1990, solid phase microextraction (SPME) has become one of the most rapidly growing sample preparation methods. Although traditionally focused on GC-amenable analytes, a recent expansion of this technique, known as biocompatible SPME (BioSPME), has been developed. BioSPME devices can be used to directly sample from complex biological matrices, without fouling of the extraction material or significant co-extraction of interferences. Extractions are followed by solvent desorption or analysis via direct-MS technologies, thus greatly reducing sample processing and analysis times. This has allowed this sample preparation methodology to evolve into a useful tool for clinical applications. One major advantage of the technique is the ability to extract the free fraction of analyte. As the unbound portion of drug is thought to be responsible for biological activity, this unique characteristic could lead to the development of more effective assays. For example, an incredibly sensitive (pg/mL) method has been developed for the extraction of various unbound steroid hormones including testosterone and its major metabolites from serum by BioSPME. This webinar will introduce basic theory and method development of BioSPME and also highlight several key applications.
