Protein of the Month

Protein of the Month, July: α-Amylase from Bacillus licheniformis (BLA)
General Description α-amylase breaks down long-chain carbohydrates and is found in animals, plants, fungi and bacteria.
Application: α-amylases are used in baking, alcohol, detergent, and textile industries. α-Amylases from different microbial sources vary in their properties and therefore provide specific applications. Cloning, expression, structural studies and protein engineering of α-amylases have been developed for specific industrial applications.
Did you know? Tris molecule is a competitive inhibitor of starch-hydrolyzing activity of BLA, it binds to the enzyme active site. Therefore, this inhibition is important to consider with studies in Tris buffer.
